The roommates: Kara- From Texas who doesn’t take anyone’s BS, who is thoughtful, always ten steps ahead, is part of my snore tribe and loves everything anime. I am fond of this woman. She is like my Big Sis, if I ever joined a sorority!
Robin – Our tallest roommate from Belgium, my Dutch teacher, shared snacks with me, comforted me after a nightmare and was always up for an interesting worldly talk.
ramsay- Ramsay was one of my first friends at the hostel. One of those guys who will pick you up from laying on the floor when you’re too exhausted to climb up to the top bunk bed (yes.. this did happen haha). Hilarious stories from back at home, great personal trainer and friend.
Loreen- Beautiful soul from Germany, always had a smile on her face including some very cute clothing, one of the youngest at the hostel, has so much in store for her and so excited to visit.
Living in a hostel finding things in the lost and found- everything you could want when you’re traveling. People would lose it or housekeeping would find it left over after someone checks out, then put into this bin for a week and if not claimed then it was up for grabs. Things we found: sunglasses, dresses, towels, backpacks, tons of toiletries!!, shoes, chargers, and so much more. When you’re traveling and these things fall in your lap of course you take advantage of it!
working at the dinner theatre (watches, learning about local community)
Working at the dinner theatre was a special treat for me. The shows ranged from Thurs- Sunday and included matinee shows as well as evening ones. I was able to bartend a bit and serve while I was there. The most unique part of the serving was definitely the watches we had to wear. They were connected to buttons on the tables, and when the guest needed something, they gave us a buzz. It works exactly like a stewardess button on an airplane – except people actually use this one! It gives the servers a physical buzz and indicates the table that needs help and what time they rang you up. It was useful most of the time, but when your wrist keeps buzzing uncontrollably I felt a bit like a prisoner :) My two favorite parts about working there were getting to see the shows/sound checks and enjoying the time working with my amazing coworkers- most of which were Australian and from the Cairns area. A lot of the guests were also locals from cairns and loved chatting to me about my accent and how I was finding it living in another country so far away. The shows I got to see included a comedian, one woman show, and the largest and craziest show was razzle dazzle. I don’t know how those theatres in vegas show the same shows all year, I needed the variety of different shows every week – two weeks.
